INTERVIEW: SPIRALARMS

What do you get when you mix six incredibly talented musicians (including Tim Narducci and Craig Locicero previously from the bands Manmade God and Systematic), throw in a little bit of blues, and an extra helping of kick-ass Rock-N-Roll?  Give up yet?  Well, it’s Spiralarms that’s who! You’ve never HEARD of Spiralarms you say?  Remember the name and let me tell you that are you in for a treat!

With their killer 2010 debut release, Highest Society, an incredible tour kicking off tonight in LA and an upcoming February – April 2013 release of their Sophomore album, Freedom, I recently had the pleasure of chatting-up Tim Narducci (vocals) and he had a lot to say.  Sit back, buckle up, and enjoy the ride known as Spiralarms.  It’s gonna kick your ass!

Spiralarms is:  Tim Narducci (Vocals/Guitar), Craig Locicero (Guitar), Anthony Traslavina (Guitar), Cornbread (Bass/Vocals), Brad Barth (Keyboards). Ron Redeen (Drums)

Interview with Tim Narducci of Spiralarms

Jase/RR:  Hey Tim! Thanks for taking the time to chat with us today. I know you’re starting your Revivalution Tour (with Zed and Swerver) tonight starting out at the Whisky A Go Go,  so I know you’re busy getting ready for that.

Tim/SA:  Thank you as well.  We appreciate anyone helping us spread the word of ROCK!

Jase/RR:  Glad to do it, you guys definitely Rock. Let’s get right into it.  Where did you come up with the name Spiralarms?

Tim/SA:  It’s funny, we actually played one show under the name “Manmade God” but then our music started changing and we decided to change our name to fit our sound. Actually, my wife showed me Spiral Arms (as in the Galaxy) and I took it to Craig and the guys, and they loved it.

Jase/RR:  Awesome.  What was your motivation behind writing and recording your 2010 release Highest Society?

Tim/SA: Highest Society was a pretty personal release.  I felt writing in the past I was getting a little bit ambiguous and I wanted to write something personal and more one-on-one, more heartfelt.  I lost a few family members in that 2-3 year period so it had a sadness to it.  It was a form of therapy for me.

Tim/SA: I actually had a guy named Chris Gingrich of GINGALLEY do that for us.   He’s an amazing artist. We wanted something like a collage, kind of psychedelic and trippy.  We are really proud of it.  With Freedom we wanted to do a Phoenix. We thought with the song “Freedom” on the cd, and with its content, we really wanted the cover to match the content.  I actually had a tattoo buddy of mine help me with that.   I’m very happy with it.

Jase/RR:  Speaking of Freedom, do you have a release date for that?  Also what can we expect from Freedom?

Tim/SA:  We’re shooting for a February – April 2013 release for Freedom.  It is definitely a heavier album.  I think it’s more focused and bluesier.

Jase/RR:  Your Revivalution Tour starts tonight. What can fans expect on this tour? Also, if you could choose a dream tour, who would you tour with?

Tim/SA:  We are really looking forward to seeing the fans and introducing ourselves to our new fans. We are going to be playing a lot of our new stuff off of Freedom, so the fans will get a chance to hear some new songs.   It is going to be a high energy kick-ass show. For a dream tour, we obviously would love to tour with some of the greats like AC/DC or Zeppelin. We would love to tour with Black Label Society, The Black Crows, Clutch.

Jase/RR: I hear a lot of different influences in your album  Highest Society. Name some major influences.

Tim/SA:  The Seattle music scene was a breath of fresh air for us. Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden all of those bands are a big influence.  When I first heard Guns-N-Roses’ Appetite I knew the tide had changed. The Cult’s Electric Record was really big for me too.

Jase/RR:  Who wrote the majority of your album Highest Society? How about the upcoming release Freedom?

Tim/SA: On Highest Society I would say Craig ¾ and me, ¼.  With Freedom, I wrote the whole album.

Jase/RR:  When you sit down to create how does the process go?

Tim/SA:  First of all I have to be in the mood to create.  In Systematic it was something we had to do and it was forced; not in Spiralarms, I get inspired and sit down with a beer and just let it flow.

Jase/RR:  What makes Spiralarms differ from other bands out there?

Tim/SA: I think our chemistry makes our sound.  We are not afraid to take chances.   We like to carve our own trail and blaze our own path.

Jase/RR:  You have four words to describe  Spiralarms and your upcoming release Freedom. What are they?

Tim/SA:  Heavy, Brutal, Beautiful, Thoughtful.

Jase/RR:  Where would you like to see your band in five  years?

Tim/SA:  Definitely with two  more records (besides Freedom). I would really like to build and continue on this Revivalution Tour.   I would like to build it up and be able to tour the whole country, sort of like Ozzfest or Lollapolooza, just take a lot of great bands out with us. That would definitely be a goal.

Jase/RR:  This is your chance to personally send your fans (present and new) a message.  It can be anything.  What do you want them to know?

Tim/SA:  Just that we love all of our fans that have been with us from the beginning and we hope to make a lot of new friends in the future!  Come to our shows, like us on Facebook, buy our shit!  (laughs) Don’t forget that our new album will be out between February and April of next year.  Pick it up – I promise  you won’t be disappointed.  Also, I cannot stress this enough:  PLEASE get out there and support live local music.  Get out and be part of it!  If you don’t, it will fail to exist.

Very well said Tim. Get out there and support live and local music and look for their new release called Freedom in early Spring.
